Gozney Dome vs Dome S1 - what are the differences - gozney pizza ovens

Gozney Dome vs Gozney Dome S1 – What’s the Difference?

Last year, Gozney launched the Gozney Dome S1 gas pizza oven, which on the surface in terms of aesthetics at least, seems a very similar oven to the iconic Gozney Dome. This understandably has led to many questions from our customers about what exactly the differences are between the two ovens, and why you’d buy one over the other. So much so, we thought we’d dedicate a full blog to the subject of the Gozney Dome vs Dome S1.

So, without further ado, lets dive in and see what’s what!

An Overview of the Gozney Dome Dual Fuel Pizza Oven

The Gozney Dome is very much the cream of the crop, not just when it comes to the Gozney range of ovens, but in a general sense across the industry. The Dome is a premium, dual fuel pizza oven that gives the versatility of being either wood or gas fired. It’s engineered to be user friendly, for the at-home pizza aficionado, but with the build quality and craftmanship of a professional grade pizza oven. Loved by home cooks and pro chefs alike.

Dual Fuelled

It’s generally considered that to create truly authentic Neapolitan pizza, it must be wood fired. However, where the Dome comes into its own is that it also gives you the flexibility to fire it up for a quick, last-minute cook, by using the built in gas burner, allowing you to reach a sizzling 500°C at the turn of a dial – literally!

Built in Thermometers

The Gozney Dome also has a built-in digital thermometer, which gives a precise temperature reading throughout the cooking process. There are also two meat probes, which are so handy when it comes to cooking meat and fish in your pizza oven, so you know exactly when they’re perfectly cooked.

Insulation

As mentioned above, the Gozney Dome is designed with chefs in mind, meaning it’s built using commercial grade construction and insulating properties. The Dome boasts a 30mm double-layer stone floor, as well as dense cavity insulation, meaning it not only gets up to temperature quickly, it also does an incredible job a retaining heat, meaning you don’t burn through mountains of wood, or endless supplies of propane gas in order to keep the temperature at the required level.

Steam Injector

One the of the features that sets the Gozney Dome apart from many of its direct rivals (including the Dome S1) is the addition of a steam injector. Although this comes as an additional accessory available to purchase separately, it’s a unique feature that when fitted creates more moisture in the oven when baking bread and means longer rising dough and even crispier crusts.

An Overview of the Gozney Dome S1

The Gozney Dome S1 is very much a streamlined version of the Dome. It shares many of the Dome’s visual characteristics, which is a good thing, as the Dome is a thing of beauty! It’s designed to give you the cooking capability of its big brother without too many compromises, and with a smaller price tag!

Propane Gas Fuelled

The Dome S1 is designed for simplicity. A plug and play pizza oven which gives you instant, no fuss performance without the hassle of building up a wood fire. It still reaches the amazingly high temperatures of the Dome but just by using propane gas as it’s fuel source, meaning the turn of a dial for you, and a bit less leg work!

A Simplified Dome

Although at first glance the S1 looks exactly the same as the Dome, it does have a few omissions. For example, there’s no metal side wrap and no wood store. The dock is also trimmed down and the temperature display is different. There’s no meat probes built in, but that doesn’t mean the S1 isn’t more than capable of cooking roasts such as meat joints and whole fish, you’d just have to use a handheld meat thermometer such as the Meater 2 Plus Wireless Smart Meat Thermometer.

There’s also no steam injector hole so the steam injector accessory isn’t compatible with the S1.

Insulation

In terms of insultation, the S1 shares the same 30mm double-layer stone floor as the Dome, as well as a 3-Layer Insulation shell which allows the S1 to reach temperature quickly, as and retain heat as well.

So, what do we think?

Without wanting to give the politicians’ answer, it all depends on your personal preferences and of course your budget. Without doubt the biggest difference is the fact that the Dome is a dual fuel oven which gives you the ultimate in versatility and flexibility. If you value the true authentic taste of wood fired cooking, and enjoy that aspect, then the Dome is your choice. If you’d only ever cook using gas anyway, and not as bothered about the additional accessories such as the stream injector and built in temperature probes, the S1 would probably be better suited to you.

The truth is, both these ovens are powerhouses in the pizza oven space, so either oven would be an amazing decision to your garden.
